Uneventful trip on Alaska Air. (I guess plane travel SHOULD be uneventful.) After fighting with the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) machine, we managed to buy tickets directly to downtown. How convenient! We walked right to the hotel which was just a few blocks from Union Square. We even managed to see quite a bit of the city in the afternoon.

California, Here We Come ...

It's pretty damned early now! The cheap tickets leave YVR at 7:00 am. On a weekend that's even too early to take public transit, so I've got to park in long-term, airport parking.

The last time we were in SF was in 1997 when we went to visit a friend who was terminally ill. Despite the smiles in the photograph below, it was a sad trip. That time we drove the 1600 km (990 miles) down. At the end of the short stay, Jay flew back for work and I drove the truck back alone.

This trip is just for a change of scenery and is taking place under much better circumstances. We'll be back on Tuesday evening but I hope to do some weblog entries from the hotel there.

As Petula sang, "Downtown ..."

Here's downtown New Westminster. Columbia Street was an important shopping district 40 or 50 years ago before the advent of shopping malls. Even now, most development is occuring 'uptown'.

The top of my apartment building is at the extreme left edge of the photo far behind the other buildings.

Change is Good

It's after 10:00 am and I still cannot see anything from the window. Foggy mornings are here. This generally happens in October as we're right next to the Fraser River. It's a bit comforting after this 'no-rain' summer. In true southern-mainland (Vancouver area) anticipation, I am so waiting for a real, complete, soaking, non-stop rainy day.

Do have to go to a Thomas Cook now to purchase a few American dollars. Jay's got another few days off. So we picked up Alaska Air web specials for a long weekend in San Francisco. More info later ...

I've been doing this blog for a month now.

A Visitor

Yup, Bret came out to New Westminster. He was able to stop sales shmoozing with doctors before noon today. His wife had been up as it was their 13th wedding anniversary! I appreciated the beer Bret bought me on the casino boat even if he consumes the non-alcoholic variety nowadays. He looks great 'cause he's off all carbs.

Seattle-area resident, Bret Wirta phoned last night and left a message. He's in Vancouver for a medical equipment exhibition. I will give him a call this morning and, hopefully, we'll meet up.

Playing

Maybe it is time to purchase an XBOX. The MS game console really does seem the most advanced on the market now. Can someone over 40 buy one for themselves? An Xbox would plug right into my 5.1 HTS and they've certainly attained a certain 'coolness' on TV sitcoms. (Yet, TiVo has been displayed in a few of the shows I saw this week and most of my friends don't know what that is. What synergy --- TV promoting a way to watch more TV!)

I guess you might say that I've had an interest in computer games since the classics. Most of the games with which I'm familiar would be from a bygone era. Thankfully this apartment is very small or I'd own a $US 800.00 Asteroids cabinet. (They do ship to the USA though, Bret!)

Houseboat Heaven

Are you stuck for vacation planning? Wouldn't it be fun to get twenty of your friends together for a week? Some houseboats can sleep up to this many people. During last week's trip, we stayed in Sicamous which is right on the Trans-Canada highway, west of Revelstoke. There are a number of companies that make houseboats and offer vacations on the Shuswap Lakes. With an estimated 1000 kilometers of shoreline on just one lake, everybody would be able to find a place to anchor and share the onboard spa!

Online Travel Bargains

Buying airline tickets nowadays is like playing the horses. The price that came up this morning is double what I saw last night. I never know when to actually book.
