Climb Every Mountain

Advance to next entry in archives.I don't like feeling overwhelmed. We've been home for a week now but I have not yet uploaded most of the photos from our recent trip to Flickr.

I have to remember that Rome wasn't built in a day. Likewise, there's no reason for me to hurry this job. For example, today, I worked only on the pictures taken in Salzburg, Austria. To make things interesting, I put on The Sound of Music to see if I could match any scenery and I was able to.

Photo: Salzburg, Austria

Although this particular shot wasn't a match to any movie scene, I thought maybe I'd place a copy here anyway. On our first afternoon in the city, we hiked up the mountain way beyond the castle.

I was born way too early, I guess.

For ... Crying Out Loud

I'm considering doing it again and it certainly doesn't seem like it has been four years since the last time.

What about this addiction I have? The computer I'm typing this entry on is capable of everything I require of it. Perhaps Windows Vista itself is making me feel inadequate.

Screen Capture: Windows Experience Index

Or perhaps it's just that I like spending money on equipment that soon fades into obsolescence. I don't dare add up the tab since my first IBM compatible over twenty years ago. I have constantly maintained that someday I was going to start from scratch but always seem to dribble money away on never-ending upgrades.

When I bought my current internal 300GB harddrive, I was doing so with the intention of it lasting through the next motherboard swap. Yet, disks are so cheap nowadays that I should go with a new one. I will need new DDR2 RAM for a new motherboard. My graphics card is AGP which is old technology. The current power supply is new but I might even buy a new case rather than just replacing the innards as I've done for at least a decade. Consequently, my old beige (read: yellowing) DVD writers will need to be replaced with the now nearly universal black.

Let's see what this leaves me. Items not needing replacement include:
DD/DTS Audio Card
Monitor
Video Capture Card
Keyboard / Mouse
External Hard Disk
It that all that is salvageable?

A Product Review

Dennis Hurd: Of course there were some years in the 80's when I didn't have much to shave.Thirty five years ago, when I first started, I used to shave those little whisps on my chin with an electric razor. A few years on, I think I even had a multi-voltage Norelco for overseas use. But it's pretty hard for me to determine when I changed to disposable blades. All I know is that I've been using shaving cream for years and years.

As I emptied a can yesterday, I squirted out some new Barbasol gel this morning. I seldom use this blog for a product review, but for some reason, I feel like talking about this. I most probably brought the can because I pinch a lot of pennies. Look at the can; it offers 33% more than a standard one! I also like the Barbasol brand as they have a useful nozzle. I am positive that the competitors design their cans so customers will waste a lot. With other brands, I often find myself with an extra handful of gel. I hate that it goes right down the drain unused.

My only complaint with today's
"Close Shave Formula" is that
it smells like an old man.

The Price is Right!

I just checked www.xe.com a few moments ago.

Screen Capture: 1 Canadian $ = 1.01939 US $

The little Loonie in my pocket is now worth close to $1.02 of the US kind. That seems quite amazing. When we first arrived here the local dollar was fetching around .80 and I remember, not so very long ago when it sunk to .64 only.

We were somewhere in Central Europe when we caught CNN say something about parity. I no longer have any US dollar-based assets, so, at the moment, I feel not richer nor poorer. This is all about the weakness of the greenback on the world stage. It will take a while for balance to be restored.

Canadian retail prices for most imported products were set long ago under the assumptions that are different from current circumstances. Just log on to www.BestBuy.com and www.BestBuy.ca to see how the twists have made US products now appear so much cheaper. The malls across the border ought to be ringing up lots of sales this weekend. Hordes of us will be heading south in search of bargains.

It's unfortunate I have little surplus cash after three weeks of travel in Central Europe. The Euro, unfortunately, is suffering from the opposite problem that the US dollar is presently having. It's dangerously overvalued.

A Little Cross-Promotion

If you have ever visited my eJournal and images in the past, you know that I mumble about something or another here every day. Yet, if you knock off the slash-b-l-o-g then you may land at information at my primary site.

For a decade and a half, I've kept the online equivalent of a resume. I was right at it again this morning. I added the newest trip data into my travel page. Please, feel free to click so my efforts won't go unnoticed.

It's Thanksgiving Up North

In Canada, we celebrate a few weeks ahead of the fifty states. Still, the meal remains pretty similar and I suppose often depends on family traditions.

Photo: Shinji's Thanksgiving turkey of 2002
We're heading to Richmond to have some bird later this afternoon. Going there for the special day is our tradition now. This photo is Shinji's effort from back in 2002.

For the Record

I was up at four o'clock in the morning as I've obviously not adjusted to Vancouver time yet  We got back on Friday night from our recent trip to Central Europe.  Although we had sketched out our recent trip, the itinerary was fairly flexible.

After a few days of taking photos, I remembered that I'd not reset my camera's clock.  Then, when I finally did, I think I was a day off.  Therefore, the EXIF data on my digital photos are basically way off the mark.  I thought it might be a good idea to type this chart here just to keep it straight in my own mind.  In the end, this was the schedule of cities where we slept.
