The Honesty of Mustafa Sabet

I am going to write the story of honesty of Mustafa Sabet. First of all, I am going to intruduce Mustafa. He is a devoted, sincere, and honest Ahmadi member of Jamait Ahmadiyya in Toronto, Canada. He is a scholar, soft-spoken and always greets you with a broad smiling face. In 1995, he invested $12,000 in Ontario Saving Bonds in Montreal Trust. But the Trust authorities added an extra zero to his digitss while entereing the data in the computer. This bloated the amount to one hundred and twenty thousand dollars! To find out what happened next, please read on what The Toronto Sun of July 1999 says about it.

Now I am going to write the story:

DYING WITH HONOUR DOESN'T WANT $143,000 FROM BOND GOOF
By: Greg Macdonald

A man dying of cancer says he does not want anything that is not his - even if it's a huge overpayment from a trust company. Mustafa Sabet, 63, a patient with inoperable leukemia, invested $12,000 in Ontario Saving Bonds with Montreal Trust in 1995. But the first statement hi received listed the value of the bond at a whopping $120,000.

"They accidently added an extra zero," Sabet said. He left the matter alone, thinking Montreal Trust bean counters weould quickly correct the mistake and fix it.

However, on the next statement, the value of his bond remained ten times greater than what he invested. Every year Sabel received a statement listing the bond's value and each time expected the glitch to be remedied later, but a correction was never made.

A spokesman from Montreal Trust confirmed the current value of Sabet's bond to be about $155,000.

"It is against my values and principles to take money that is not mine," he said, "I should not have it.

He admits there were times he was tempted to quickly cash the bond at it's maturity, he ultimately chose to stick to his convictions. Rather than calling the bank about the error, he contacted Premier Mike Harris' office. The Premier's office confirmed Sabet's letter was referred to the finance department.

This is a true spirit and real teaching of Ahmadiyyat. Take what is yours and never take what is not yours.

The Toronto Sun has mentioned Brother Mustafa Sabet as a "man dying of cancer." There is no doubt that cancer is so far incurable and a fatal disease. But we Ahmadis believe that prayers work wonders. God shows miracles and can give life even to terminal patients. Mustafa Sabet is a man for whom his lived ones and lots of people are praying with the hope that will live long and his 'uncurable lleukemia' becomes curable.

Finally, I am going to conclude that 'honesty is the best policy' for personal satisfaction.
