Remembering What
You Read

Studying is essential in school, in business, for personal improvement, and in preparation for public speaking or presentation. Remembering what I read is the important part of studying. So I am going to tell you about five suggestions for being a good reader.

First, when you study, personal organization is important. Try to study in a pleasant area with proper lighting. You must have books, writing materials, and paper within reach.

Second, you must have a regular time for study. Studying each day for short periods may be more effective than using a large amount of time at one sitting. It is good to divide your time into sections. Instead of studying nonstop for two hours, it may be better to break the time into sessions of from 25 to 40 minutes each. You could make short intervals of a few minutes in between like drinking a cup of coffee or stretching your body.

Third, before starting a book, take a few minutes to preview your material. Look at the title. Examine the table of contents. Then, read the foreword or the introduction that may state the author's aim and viewpoint. Also, preview each chapter before starting to read it. Look at subheading, illustrations, summaries, and opening and closing paragraphs. Read the first sentence of each paragraph. These sentences often contain the main idea of paragraph.

Fourth, the most important part of reading is keeping concentration. You should become totally involved. The secret is to make your study time as active as possible. Kindle enthusiasm by considering the practical aspects of the information. You can use the senses by imagining smell, taste, and touch if the material lends itself to this.

Fifth, my last suggestion is reviewing. After each study session, review for a few minutes. If possible, review again a day later, then a week later, and then a month later. Your applying these points may assist you in getting the most out of your precious study time and remembering what you have read.

So, your ability to remember things can be improved. I hope my five suggestions will help you to improve your memory.
