Differences in Studying

There are many differences between Canada and Taiwan, not only the cultures but also the style of studying English. Today, I am going to compare the teaching and studying styles of the two countries. The method of studying, the way of learning, the relationship of teachers and students, and the language of instruction are the four main ideas that I would like to contrast.

The method of studying is the first difference between Canada and Taiwan. Schools in Canada are unlike schools in Taiwan in that Canadian schools encourage students to work in a group. Students can help each other before they ask a teacher. It is also good for collecting various ideas from every member of a group. As a result, it is much easier to figure out the problems by working in a group.

Second, memorization and learning through activities are two ways of learning. Students in Taiwan use memorization whereas students in Canada learn lessons though activities. Students in Taiwan memorize everything from textbooks even though they cannot understand the context or meaning. On the other hand, students in Canada learn lessons through meaningful and interesting activities that are given by teachers. Thus, students learn more without feeling bored.

Third, the relationship between teachers and students if another difference. The relationship of a teacher and a student in Canada is not only respectful but also friendly. Unlike Taiwanese students who can only call their instructor ¡§teacher¡¨, Canadian students can use the teacher¡¦s personal name, such as Mr. Jones. As a consequence, students feel freer to ask questions in Canada and it really helps students in their studies.

Finally, the language of instruction is the last difference between these two countries. Compared to Canada, an English teacher in Taiwan always gives lessons in Mandarin. Students translate English into Mandarin all the time so they don¡¦t have a chance to think or speck in English. On the other hand, English is the only language students speak in Canada. Students get used to listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English. Therefore, international students in Canada learn faster.

In conclusion, the method of studying, the way of learning, the relationship between teachers and students, and the language of instruction are four differences between studying English in Taiwan and Canada. Not only is Canada a beautiful country for travelling, but also a great place for students to learn English faster and more effectively.
