I like learning foreign languages. At the moment, I can speak Japanese,
English, and, my mother tongue -Mandarin for sure. Different people
have different ways to learn foreign languages, however, my strategy is
the 3L's - Look, Listen, and Learn.
Learning foreign languages is difficult, we believe, but if we keep using a
foreign language, we might find it quicker to remember, easier to understand by
using the 3L's, and handy to use. Firstly, I'd like to give you a suggestion: look more. What
does that mean? It means to do more reading, do more watching foreign
movies or drama, and take more time to observe foreign people's daily life.
In this way, you can not only get to know about the language, but also
the culture. It's very important to have some idea about the culture of the
country(ies) when you are learning a certain language. It helps you in
understanding and communicating. Secondly, listening is another essential
way of learning foreign languages. Take English as an example, some
people will find it tough to pronounce words which have many
syllables, 'th' sound and to distinguish the difference between 'l'
and 'r' sound. You won't be afraid of the difficulty any more as long as
you often listen to English tapes, radio, and talk with native speakers.
As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. To master a foreign language,
we need more than looking and listening, meanwhile, we are learning.
Since I came to Canada, I found the language enviroment is very helpful
for me. We have a home stay program so that we can practise English
with the family. Very different from being in China, we have to say
everything in English in our home stay family, otherwise they won't understand
what we are talking about. When it comes to a word that I have never
heard before, I ask for it to be repeated, look it up in the dictionary, and
put it down in a little pad. Whenever I am free, on a bus, or during the
break time, I go over it.
In a word, there are all kinds of methods we can try to learn foreign
languages well, and yet, in my opinion, these 3L's - Look, Listen, and Learn
are the key points.
