Do you feel secure when you walk alone at night? Recently, due to the successively attacks on the Asian girls, the security issue has become a hot topic among people in Vancouver. There’s a great controversy in the Canadian legal system on whether Canada should adopt death penalty. Arguments are always raised between morality and legality.
Some agree for they think that death penalty is needed to give justice and prevention to the society. The reasons can be grouped into two parts. One is that a prison sentence is not enough to punish those who commit unforgivable crimes. Killing people, for example, is too cruel, which seriously violates the basic human rights of the victims. If the law can only sentence these criminals in jail for several years, the justice of law will appear too weak and thus largely hurt the feelings of the victims’ family. The other reason is that the death penalty can effectively prevent people from dangerous behavior. In fact, death is always the most appalling thing for ordinary person. Some of the crimes can be prevented if people just have a little more vigilance. So obviously this ultimate punishment will be very necessary to stop the crimes.
However, there are many people still strongly oppose the death penalty. They think that the purpose of punishment is not revenge but resocialization. Reasons for opposing also fall into two groups. First, some innocent people might have been executed when there was no concrete evidence to show conclusively to their guilty and participation in crimes. Another reason is that the way of execution is inhuman. There are several ways to execute: injection, electrocution, gas chamber, hanging and so on. Death usually takes few minutes. People think that the prisoners die in peace and calmly, but think about the fear, which they will feel while waiting for execution. This is really inhuman to them. In addition, the Christian faith is also one reason for people to oppose the death penalty.
Admittedly, no one has the right to deprive others of their lives. Whereas, when thinking of those appalling crimes, I think the death penalty is still needed to effectively warn people. Although, there are misjudgments in some cases, in general, the mistakes rarely occur.
