Night Street-Racing in Richmond

Four hundred people die on the province’s road every year. Of course, not all of them died by the street-racing accidents; however, street-racing accidents are the most avoidable and predicable road accidents. Richmond, one of the cities in BC, is now well-known for the illegal night street-racing. The Richmond RCMP has been trying its effort in terms of decreasing the street-racing incidence. Richmond RCMP tapes a 24-hour record to catch the popular areas of street racers. It also installs road-narrowing devices and disciplines the street races by suspending their driving licenses one to two years. Consequently, the street racers have moved from this place to other places. Due to less of police’s harassment, Delta’s industrial parks have become one of the alternatives for the street racers.

Street-racing is a problem across North America. As we saw the movie, The Fast and The furious, took place with drag race. The plot of the movie mentioned a lot of illegal attitudes that were abut drugs, alcohol, and gambling within the young generation. We have to seriously keep an eye on the street-racing. These illegal attitudes haven’t been spotted in BC yet, but the dangers of street-racing are obvious.

Taiwan used to have a serious street-racing problem in which people were even killed by the event of street-racing. Street-racing was a subculture but attracted large audiences to watch the street racers’ performances. After a long struggle, the government of Taiwan decided to take street-racing up to next level. As a result, many car racing courses were built throughout Taiwan. Even though this method cannot make street-racing totally disappear, it can decrease the incidence of street-racing and does cultivate many outstanding car racers.

Currently, an online petition for a racetrack in Vancouver is in circulation. This phenomenon is very interesting to me. In my opinion, car racing has a very high risk characteristic that car racers have to be will trained, experiential, and ethical. When competing on the racing circuit, drivers have to be as fast as possible; but, when driving down the street, which is a different story, drivers have to be as careful as possible. A reckless street racer can cause trouble for himself, his family, and innocent people. Educating and providing a racing course for the younger people will be significant to help them to understand what the real dangers are when they drive in this particular matter.
