BCIT COMM 0004

Demonstrating Course Skills

My name is Dennis Hurd. I was lucky to be able to teach this interesting section of students. Our class entitled, Technical Communication for Second Language Students, took place in NE406 at the Burnaby Campus. The classes started in January and finished up on April 14, 2002 after 120-contact hours!

A limited number of international students are involved in special Business / Management programs at BCIT. The standard British Columbia Institute of Technology's COMM 0004 and COMM 0005 courses are a prerequisite for those students who do not have a passing English mark from a Canadian high school.

Technical writing tasks were very important in our course. We created flowcharts, tables, classification trees, and used other pre-writing strategies. Twelve, formal writing assignments covered many different topics and included work on descriptions, comparisions, cause & effect, and instructions.

These writings were completed near the end of our time together. The goal was to complete a writing which focussed on some of the structures we studied during the term. The topics were decided by the students and the material was copied directly from computer word-processing files.
