Good or Bad Company Leaders

The corporate leaders have been making big differences, depending on their performance, which means the quality of the leader determines corporate future. From 2000 to 2002, revenues of companies ranking from one to ten on the Global Fortune 500 list rose by an average of 13.2%. But revenues of companies ranking from 11 to 20 dropped 7.7% on average, showing uneven performances.

As the business environment rapidly changes and gets more and more competitive, the role of leaders of firms has become increasingly crucial. At a time of dynamic change, the role of leaders in leading their companies in the right direction cannot be overemphasized.

The Best Leaders
- Flexible, dynamic, and challenging character
Leaders in this group are capable of upgrading their companies’ core competency which is built over the years by adapting to the competitive conditions. They are always on guard against backsliding and continuously striving to improve and reform their management style as well as corporate culture. The more they perform, and the better they respond, the more innovative they become.

- Working as an competent deliverer of the corporate vision
Leaders in this category show employees clear business direction on the strength of their own vision of the future. Their role can be compared to that of an evangelist. They usually have a sharp nose for good management; they swiftly catch potentials for profits when they see them by strategically capitalizing on their external networks in achieving ambitious goals

- Indomitable leaders
Leaders in this category face problems head-on, overcoming corporate difficulties by aggressively and decisively restructuring their ailing companies. Carlos Ghosn of Nissan and Carly Fiorina of Hewlett Packard possess these qualities. Leaders of this type will not give up until they succeed. Once they see an opportunity for success, they will jump at it and endure until they achieve their goals.

As you can see, there are a number of advantages that company can get from the good quality of leaders. On the other hand, sometimes, company goes out of business due largely to its leader who has poor performance.

The Worst Leaders
- Falling leaders
These leaders, in times of difficulty, are unable to sustain the rapid growth. Their earnings decline sharply in times of recession. Leaders in this group have been criticized for pursuing short-term profits through questionable means such as collusive links with politicians, creative accounting, and deceiving consumers. Not only does this tarnish the image of the leaders themselves, but also spoil the reputation of their companies.

- Hesitating leaders
Leaders in this group usually fail to respond swiftly to new market trends. Ineffective responses to the markets and not being able to adapt to new trends ultimately will lead their companies to crisis after crisis.

So far, I mentioned a lot of things to help people to become the best leader. As a matter of fact, a number of employers or the leaders of firms have already known how to properly manage their company to make a lot of profit. However, the reason why each of them has different performance in their workplace is that some employees keep observing and analyzing business situations with leader’s sight even though they are not leader of the group, which means that some employees have already been working as a leader since low level position. In a word, we need to obtain the sense of the best leader and train it in order to perfectly comprehend the sense.
