Cultural Differences Between Canada and India

Every country in this world has its own culture, but if we compare India and Canada, one would notice some differences fairly quickly. The two countries have diverse cultures, which can further be divided into four different criteria: population, religions, families, and festivals.

First of all, India has very vast population of more than one billion, but if we compare to Canada, Canada has only about 35 million. Moreover, in the future, the populations in Canada will continuously increasing, because now more people immigrating to Canada.

Second, in India there are four different religions i.e. is Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam, and Christianity. Out of all of these religions, Hinduism is a widely accepted religion, which has been known to have the highest percentage of followers. This is shown in the graph below.

On the other hand, in Canada there are many different religions because Canada is a democratic country and many people from different countries who immigrated to this country and therefore are creating a diversity of cultures. In addition, Canada’s religions include Christianity (Roman catholic 47%, Protestant 41%), Judaism, Islam and Hinduism.

Next, unlike in Canada, in India people like to live in the extended families, because they believe that living together with their elders, parents and their children’s will keep their family united. Moreover, they also believe that while living together they understand the key value of love and respect. However, in Canada people want their own independence and they don’t want to live their parents and elders.

Finally, in India there are many festivals, which are related to religion, farmers, workers and the nation. They celebrate each festival differently by making different special foods and sweets for each occasion. For example, on Diwali, which is the festival of Hindus, people make sweets and fires work. On Wish karma, which is the festival of workers, people pray the Wish karma God and eat roti, which is a special kind of round bread made from wheat. On the other hand in Canada, people belong to different countries and they celebrate their festivals according to their countries culture.

In conclusion, because of population, religion, families, and festival, India and Canada have different cultures.
