Differences Between Japanese
University & BCIT

I've been studying Business Management Studies for three months at BCIT but I've already graduated from Doshihsa University in Japan. I've noticed that there are many different things between University in Japan and BCIT during this program.

The students in Japanese Universities are different from BCIT students because almost all students in Japanese University are same nationality and the same age. On the other hand, there are many students from different countries at BCIT. There are even students with children. It was very surprising things for me. Basically, it is very difficult for Japanese students to enter the university but once they pass the entrance exam, they tend to become lazy about studying. In contrast to this, it is quite easy for Canadians to enter BCIT but they must studying very hard to graduate. I think that BCIT students are more serious than the average Japanese student.

When I compare both in the point of class atmosphere, there are also big diferences. In Japan, there are about 200 students studying in the class, so some students keep talking to their friends and the professors don't care what students are doing. It's rare for students to ask questions. However, a class is very small and there are 10 to15 students at BCIT. The teachers always encourage students to say their opinion and ask questions. Because BCIT focuses on teamwork, the students sometimes discuss about a subject with their classmates.

BCIT's program is unlike a program in a Japanese university that groups of students all are studying the same programs together. Therefore, their schedules are very hard, about 25 to30 hours per week. On addition to this, it is very hard to pass the exams. A large percentage of students fail to their course. On the other hand, a program in Japanese University is quite flexible. The students can choose what they want. Each subject is easy to pass so that most students graduate after four years.

In terms of job placement, most students in Japan get a job that is not relative to their major but BCIT students want to get a job in order to make good use of their studies at BCIT.

As you see there are many differences between University in Japan and BCIT. If you are thinking to study another country, it is very important to know differences between schools in your country and ones in the country where you want to study.

Now, I'm studying at BCIT enjoying these differences.
